The Making of our Knitwear collection, with Robert Mackie of Scotland

Famous for their impeccable quality and bold use of colour, Robert Mackie of Scotland have passed their craftsmanship down through generations of skilled makers. We travelled north to Scotland to meet the people and discover the process behind our newest knitwear collection.

Crafted from the finest natural yarns sourced from world-leading spinners, Robert Mackie remain committed to reducing their environmental impact. Using a sustainable and renewable product at the heart of their process, continual innovation in manufacturing helps them move closer to zero waste. Each piece is made from carefully sourced raw materials and gently wet-finished for an irresistibly soft touch.

In homage to Robert Mackie, we decided to photograph our Knitted Accessories in Scottish fields, amongst nature. Our Creative Producer, Bella, visited the factory whilst she was there for the photoshoot. A team member from Robert Mackie kindly showed her and the crew around, showing every step of the production process from steaming, stitching and even pom pom making. The wonderful Theresa (one of Robert Mackie’s longstanding staff members) taught her how to use the pom machine. A very jolly, smiley atmosphere, everyone at Robert Mackie was more than happy to have a chat and explain their role within the company.

Established in 1845 by Robert Mackie, the brand has remained a cornerstone of Scottish knitwear for almost two centuries, with expertise passed down through generations of skilled makers. Since 2015, under the leadership of Graeme Haddow, Robert Mackie has continued to evolve - combining traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation and a firm commitment to sustainability.

Every stage of production takes place entirely in-house at their Ayrshire mill, from initial design and machine knitting to wet finishing, brushing and assembly. This hands-on approach ensures complete control over quality and authenticity, maintaining the brand’s reputation for excellence.

Proudly made in Scotland, Robert Mackie holds a number of respected industry certifications, including Woolmark licensing, and affiliations with the UK Fashion & Textile Association and Textiles Scotland. As SEDEX members with a SMETA audit, the brand upholds rigorous ethical and environmental standards across every aspect of production.
